Raise Up for the South! Press Conference in Richmond

Here are some photos from today’s Raise Up! press conference, which was held at the McDonald’s at E. Broad and 18th.

The rain and the cold didn’t stop fast food workers, or supporting unions and organizations from showing up to take a stand against wage theft and abuse at work. Fast food workers demand respect, $15 an hour, an end to wage theft and more!

Richmond groups to mark ‘Richmond Liberation Day’

by opposing plan for a baseball stadium in Shockoe Bottom

 

The African Ancestral Chamber and the Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality will hold a press conference and vigil at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3rd, at the corner of Crane and East Broad streets in Shockoe Bottom. The purpose of the events is to commemorate Richmond Liberation Day, and bring attention to unfavorable developments such as a sports stadium within the historic district where captive Africans were sold.

April 3rd will be the 148^th anniversary of the day that African American soldiers led Union troops into Richmond, liberating its people from Confederate rule, freeing enslaved Africans from the notorious Lumpkin’s Jail and ending slavery in the city, where it had existed for more than 300 years. The day was annually celebrated by Richmond’s African American community until the beginning of the Jim Crow era.

The corner of Crane and East Broad streets is next to the Exxon gas station, which stands on the site of what once was Omohundro’s Jail, a holding structure for enslaved Africans similar to Lumpkin’s. Plans by various groups in the City call for placing a stadium at this site.

Following the vigil, participants will visit Richmond’s African Burial Ground to show their respect for the ancestors buried there.

First Day of Class Vigil at Norrell Elementary School- Monday September 10th

Parents For Life_2012 invites you to join us for the Preschoolers First Day of Class Vigil at Norrell Elementary School. Norrell Elementary School was closed in 2006 because there were environmental concerns about the site, which was built on an old city landfill.

Parents for Life_2012 believe that the health and welfare of the city’s children should be the primary concern of the Richmond City School Board. We are committed to remain vigilant in our demand for an excellent learning environment for our most

vulnerable 3 & 4 year old pre-schoolers as well. We will remind everyone that we believe this school board has failed in their duty to OUR children.Please join us in reminding the school board that they have endangered our children and that we will persist in our effort to protect our children.

While we wish to express our outrage at the school board’s decision, we do not want to frighten the children nor do we want to interrupt nor interfere with the normal operation of the school.

We, therefore want everyone attending this vigil to be respectful of students and staff. We ask that this be a quiet vigil and that no one yell at school personnel nor enter the school grounds. We are to remain on the sidewalks.

Representatives of Parents For Life_2012 will be present in shifts starting at 7:30 AM until 4:00 PM on Monday Sept 10.
