Wednesday May 1st from 12 noon to 1pm at the VCU Commons Plaza

May Day is a day to celebrate the victories of the working-class in their struggles against exploitation and oppression throughout history. Join the Living Wage Campaign and its allies on May Day, International Workers’ Day, as we rally for a living wage for service workers at VCU.

The average VCU service employee, especially those working through Aramark, rarely receives a pay raise. Many VCU employees must hold more than one job just to make ends meet. At the same time, many adjunct professors also do not make a livable salary and have no insurance or job security.

It is our tuition money that funds VCU, and we have every right to be outraged. The mistreatment of workers and the misplaced priorities of VCU come at the expense of the students as well.

The rally will start at noon in the Commons/Ram’s Plaza (where the big ram horns are).

Richmond Food Not Bombs will be providing some food for folks at this rally as an act of solidarity. If you are able to, bring some money to donate to FNB, or bring a grocery item we use (oil, sugar, salt, flour, spices, pasta, rice) etc. You could also come help us cook any Sunday from 12:30 to 3:30 at 2005 Barton Avenue, come eat in the park every Sunday at 4pm at the corner of Main and Belvidere in Monroe Park, or come clean up after the meal at 2005 Barton Avenue.

Training 6:30 – 9:00Struggles for justice have intensified this year as our communities face an all-out assault on our rights. Growing ranks of activists getting organized to fight back find increased repression targeting protest and free speech. If ever a moment called us to bold action it is now.

Direct action can be a powerful tool to focus our collective power. In this highly interactive workshop we’ll explore the basics of how to plan organize and implement a safe, effective direct action. topics covered will include de-escalating behaviors in tense situations, quick decision-making, roles and responsibilities and more.

This training is offered in support of our movements for justice in this region by Occupy RVA and the Wayside Center for Popular Education.

Local graphic designer, Bizhan Khodabandeh has designed a May Day 2012 patch for Richmond that we will be printing on April 27th at the Pre-May Day Show at the Wingnut.

The patches are a roughly 4″ x 4″ design so bring pieces of fabric a little larger than that if you want to make a patch, or whatever fabric or shirt you want the image on! We will also have some pre-made for folks too.

Bizhan’s other amazing work can be found online at www.mendedarrow.com  Bizhan has contributed a lot of work into Richmond May Day festivities over the past couple of years, designing previous bandannas and posters.

The Pre-May Day Show is on Friday April 27th at 7pm at 2005 Barton Avenue. There will be music and labor songs by Snail Party, Jake Mayday, and 2 other local acts. Sober, All Ages. No cover charge, but donations for Snail Party from Canada and merch from other bands encouraged.

The Wingnut will be participating in Richmond’s 3rd annual May Day Parade and Rally! This will be the 3rd year of Richmond Food Not Bombs being involved, and the 2nd year for the Wingnut. The parade and Rally are on Sunday May 1st, starting in our favorite park, Monroe Park.
If you are interested in helping to make signs, carts, etc. for this event please get in touch! There will be a lot going on, so any extra hands to help prepare Food Not Bombs that day, or to come back to the Wingnut after the parade to do cleanup would be sincerely appreciated.
We will also be hosting out of town guests at the Wingnut that weekend. If you are interested in a sober, all ages space (that has dogs) please let the May Day organizers know to send you to the Wingnut!
