Be part of the first Community Conversation on the alternative plan for Shockoe Bottom – NO to a Stadium, YES to a Historic District! (Black Community Issues Workshop, 10:40 am)
Plan actions for 2014 in the struggle for Jobs, Peace & Justice!
For a full schedule, log onto http://www.vapeoplesassembly.org (The most detailed schedule will be posted by the end of Jan. 2)

No Stadium in Shockoe Bottom!
See the details of a new alternative Vision Plan for Shockoe Bottom – development and history without the offending ballpark. Maps, narrative and bullet points are posted on http://www.shockoebottom.blogspot.com

Attend the upcoming City Council District Hearings on the mayor’s plan to desecrate what once was the site of the second-largest slave-trading district in the U.S. Full schedule at http://www.shockoebottom.blogspot.com.
And be sure to come to City Hall for these important votes:
6 pm Monday, Jan. 13 – City Council is scheduled to vote on two ordinances that would allow the City to take possession of the Diamond, making it easier for the mayor to move ahead with his proposal. Due to public pressure, the vote has already been postponed four times. Let’s get it voted down now!
6 pm Monday, Jan. 27 – City Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution to express approval for the mayor’s development proposal. This will be a critical vote because it will tell us where each council member stands and if the mayor has the seven votes he needs to push the whole proposal forward. Let’s be there!

“Talk to the Editor”
A new monthly, call-in, talk radio program on Richmond’s WCLM Radio, “The Heart & Soul of the City.” 2-3 pm every first Monday, with Phil Wilayto, Editor of The Virginia Defender newspaper. 1450 AM and online at: http://www.wclmradioonline.com

Farewell to DefendersLIVE
We wish a fond farewell to DefendersLIVE, the weekly program of news and commentary hosted by Defender Ana Edwards for nine years on WRIR, Richmond’s “Radio of the Rest of Us.” Ana has hung up her earphones and will concentrate her energies on her many other activities. We all extend our grateful appreciation for her incredible and selfless efforts over the years that have enlightened and inspired us in so many ways.

Tom Cleary, Presente!
And we bid a sad but grateful faarewll to our friend and comrade, Tom Cleary, who passed just a few years ago. A former Catholic priest who fond his calling as an activist while serving along the poor of Latin America, Tom, a longtime member of Pax Christi-Richmond, was a fixture on Richmond marches and rallies, bringing his winning smile and wry coments to every struggle. We will miss you, Tom. Thanks for sharing your time and wisdom with us.
