Join the Wingnut Anarchist Collective in a celebration of Harriet Tubman on October 10th.
You might know October 10th as Christopher Columbus Day. This Federal holiday is meant to celebrate the genocidal, colonial, racist, and capitalist actions of one Christopher Columbus. Well, fuck that! Based on conversations with youth in our neighborhood last year, we have decided to take this day back, to celebrate someone who deserves to be honored and celebrated.
The youth in our neighborhood pointed out that they would rather celebrate Harriet Tubman, which sounds like an excellent idea to us. So to take advantage of a day when kids have off of school and many adults have off of work, we are hosting a Harriet Tubman Day event!
Harriet Tubman is known as a participant in the Underground Railroad as part of the resistance to Slavery in the United States. She escaped slavery, helped lead others to freedom, and even helped John Brown recruit people for the raid on Harper’s Ferry. Come find out more about this amazing woman!
And what better way to celebrate than with an Ice Cream Social? Monday October 10th from 1pm until 4pm at 2005 Barton Avenue.
We will have vegan and non-vegan options of ice cream and toppings. Anyone who is able to bring ice cream or toppings to share is encouraged to.
There will also be posters and information about Harriet Tubman, and about why Christopher Columbus sucks. We will have activity pages about Harriet Tubman for the young at heart. We are hoping to also have some zines or maybe even presentations, musical performances, or workshops on Harriet Tubman and her legacy. We will update with details closer to the date, and we welcome ideas from anyone willing to facilitate a workshop or perform!
We are ending the event at 4pm, to give everyone time to get ready to attend the 9th Annual Gabriel’s Rebellion and Burial Ground Commemoration. This event will be on Monday October 10th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at a location TBA. The annual Gabriel’s Forum, sponsored by the Sacred Ground Historical Reclamation Project of the Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality. Held each year on the anniversary of the execution of Gabriel, the heroic slave rebellion leader who was executed on this date at the town gallows at Richmond’s African Burial Ground. Each year we discuss the significance of Gabriel’s planned rebellion, as well as contemporary issues. Please join us!
