RPD continue to kick people out of other parks and camps in Richmond.The Monroe Park Occupation is now having people who get kicked out of places like Kanawha Plaza come to join the camp. A lot of the time though, RPD does not let people grab their belongings before kicking them out. So more blankets/tents/tarps/food/entertainment is crucial.
The Occupation had about …8 people show up in the middle of the night last night and folks are excited that the Occupation is a safe place to sleep, but would also like it to be warm!

The Monroe Park Occupation is a group of people forming a community in Monroe Park near the corner of Main and Laurel.
They are a multi-issue Occupation that has been encamped in Monroe Park since 4pm on Monday March 7th.
A City Official informed the Occupation on Friday March 11th that City Administrators wanted to negotiate with the Occupation.

However, the Occupation will only meet to discuss demands once the City gets the cops to stop busting up all homeless camps. Once that is agreed upon, folks from the occupation will meet with City Officials in the park at 11 at night.

Current Demands:
– Don’t cut down trees in Monroe Park
-Legalize Squatting in Richmond
-25-100% of Monroe Park should remain open at all times
-Stop destroying/busting up homeless camps

Monroe Park Occupation: Going on Night 5

Just a quick update, the Occupation of Monroe Park is still going on. No problems on the 4th night of the occupation. Tonight (Friday) will be the 5th night of the Occupation. There will be a meeting of the Occupation at 11pm.

Corner of Main and Laurel in Monroe Park. There is a Really Really Free Market going on all weekend. Please bring entertainment and food/dog food to support the occupants.

Monroe Park Occupation: Night 3 Come and Gone

Around 15people continued the Occupation of Monroe Park last night, despite the rain and bad weather. They build their own tent structure and hopefully stayed fairly dry over the night.

If you can’t make it to Wisconsin or if you don’t know what to do to stop TRAP, or if you are looking for a place to stay, or if you don’t want to see over 60 trees cut down, or if you are tired of the criminalization of the homeless, or if you are tired of how oppressive the capitalist system is etc. – come Occupy Monroe Park.

Monroe Park Occupation: Night 2 Reportback

Tuesday night was another cold night in Monroe Park. However, that did not stop the Monroe Park Occupation from setting up more of the camp. There is now a banner which reads “Free Tuition For Everyone”, as well as anarchist flags, a Really Really Free Market table, a food tent (kitchen), and a couch. Throughout Tuesday occupiers talked with passing pedestrians about the issues they were concerned with.

There were between 12-15 of us Tuesday night… including folks who regularly congregate in the park, a couple folks from IWW, Food Not Bombs, Queer Action, and a surprising number of people who just came over to play music and have a great time.

Friends, new friends, and supporters stopped by throughout the night to check on the Occupation and hang out in the park.

Tonight a storm is scheduled to begin which will last through Thursday day. Anyone who has any tents, tarps, ponchos, or blankets to bring to the park is encouraged to do so. Anyone willing to get a little wet is also encouraged to spend the night in the park.

Occupy Monroe Park : Update of Night 1

We showed up to the park around 4, and pretty much immediately jumped straight into organizing. A bathroom was built, a short list of demands was started, and an initial meeting with all participants concerning pigs and media was had. Crucial info was taken down for the folks who are willing to get arrested, and the banner was raised.

There were between 25 and 30 of us last night… including folks who regularly congregate in the park, a couple folks from IWW, Food Not Bombs, Queer Action, and a surprising number of people who just came over to play music and have a great time. There was only one incident with police, before dark, when we were told to take a tent down… but it’s been all quiet since, with no interaction with the cops (and very little sleep).

Today is going to be bigger and better…. more banners, more people, bigger plans, and a filmographer from Boston who’s going to be here with us for a bit. It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day, and at least another night here.

An occupation of Monroe Park in Richmond, Virginia is starting today, Monday March 7th at 4pm. We are posting the flier from this event to support those occupying the park.

In a time of mass layoffs, increasing criminalization of homelessness and immigrants, gentrification, rising tuition costs, union busting, foreclosures, legislative attacks on the reproductive autonomy of women, rampant homo- and trans- phobia, an ever increasing gap between the rich and the poor, a still-prevelant system of institutional racism, and constant police surveillance and repression, there is only one option for those who seek to maintain their dignity and their hope…… RESIST!

The capitalist system will crush us all unless we refuse to be crushed. Take back the world that is being stolen from you!

TRAP- Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers is a piece of legislation in Virginia that singles out abortion providers for an absurd amount of regulation- which if put into effect would cut down the abortion providers in Virginia from 21 to 4.

This is nothing but an ATTACK on Women.
